Partial Knee Replacement
Minimally invasive resurfacing for single-compartment knee arthritis.
Procedure Overview
Partial Knee Replacement (unicompartmental arthroplasty) is a targeted procedure for patients whose arthritis is confined to a single section of the knee. By preserving the healthy cartilage and ligaments in the other compartments, this muscle-sparing surgery offers a more natural-feeling joint and rapid recovery.
Surgical Approach & Technique
Through a smaller incision, only the damaged compartment's bone is resurfaced and capped with metal and plastic implants. The healthy bone, cartilage, and all major ligaments (including the ACL and PCL) are left completely untouched.
Procedure Highlights
- Compartment-specific resurfacing
- Muscle-sparing smaller incisions
- ACL & PCL ligament preservation
Who May Be a Candidate?
- ✓ Patients with osteoarthritis restricted strictly to the medial or lateral compartment.
- ✓ Individuals with healthy, intact anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments (ACL/PCL).
- ✓ Patients who wish to maintain natural joint kinematics and proprioception.
Common Symptoms & Conditions
- ▪ Pain localized to one side of the knee (typically the inner side).
- ▪ Knee pain primarily during weight-bearing activities.
- ▪ Absence of pain or stiffness in the kneecap or opposite side of the joint.
Postoperative Recovery Pathway
Because the surgical incision is smaller and healthy tissue is preserved, patients experience less pain and swelling. Recovery is typically faster than a total knee replacement, with many returning to full daily activities within 3 to 6 weeks.
